2013 Seattle Mariners Prospect No. 10: Francisco Martinez

Francisco Martinez, 3B/CF, Jackson Generals (AA, average age 24.3 in 2012)

6-2, 210 lbs, 22 years old

Bats: Right, Throws: Right

Acquired: 2011 Trade with Detroit Tigers (Doug Fister)

2012 Ranking: 4th

ETA: 2014

I’m undoubtedly higher on Francisco Martinez than most. Nobody doubts his athletic ability, but a lot of people have pointed out that he’s less than a year younger than Carlos Triunfel and hasn’t had a dominant offensive season yet. The main difference is that Triunfel has been moving to less-athletic positions, while the Mariners seem interested in putting Martinez in center field, where they have very little organizational depth, and he’s got potential to be an upper-level defensive third baseman. At one point last year it looked like Martinez would break camp in Tacoma, splitting time between either outfield or third base. Alex Liddi and Vinnie Catricala took most the reps at third and Trayvon Robinson and Darren Ford split time in center field for most the year. Martinez didn’t increase his power numbers, and while his BABIP may have fallen below where it will be in a season of normal luck, last year was definitely a step back. We don’t know how much learning a new position may have effected Martinez, and saw a significant jump in his walk rates. Last year I had Martinez higher than anyone else and I probably do again this year.

Sorry Casey, this kid seems disappointing to me so far, in the time he’s been in our organization. I’d love you to be proven right. I get that people with the Tigers and M’s have seen some potential in him but he kind of needs to show it off better if he any has hopes of a big league career.

I totally agree with you. I am out on a limb with him again. I think he could be very good.

Casey, I sure hope you are right about Francisco! I was happy at the time of the Doug Fister trade, but unless F-mart comes thru it’s not looking so good now.
