2013 Seattle Mariners Prospect No. 18: Patrick Kivlehan

Patrick Kivlehan, 3B/OF, Everett Aquasox (A-, average age 21.1 in 2012)

6-2, 210 lbs, 23 years old

Bats: Right, Throws: Right

Acquired: 2012 Amateur Draft (4th Round)

2012 Ranking: Unranked

ETA: 2015

Many of you will notice that Kivlehan is listed as an outfielder despite playing only third base in the minors, and third base in college. Kivlehan burst onto the scene in the Big East, playing only one year of baseball but winning the Big East player of the year award. His momentum extended into A ball, where he mashed in Everett to the tune of a .301/.373/.511 slash line. He hit 12 homeruns, 17 doubles, three triples, and stole 14 bases, only being caught once in that span. So here’s the bad stuff, he struck out a ton (29.4 percent) and didn’t walk enough to supplement it, while running a .412 BABIP. He won’t be able to carry that BABIP through his career, though his foot speed and power could make him profile as a high-BABIP guy. Kivlehan also made 16 errors in only 179 chances, and while errors and fielder percentage aren’t a sufficient indicator of future success or failure, Kivlehan’s past as a defensive back makes it likely that he could excel in an outfield corner, or perhaps even in center field.

Kivlehan’s back story is interesting but it’s hard to say what will become of him from here on. He’s old for his level and was away from the game for three years, that’s a lot of experience to make up for. However he looks like a potential thumper and they are fun to watch. I signed up for MiLB-TV this year so I can eyeball some of these names and numbers, I’m looking forward to that.

He should get an aggressive promotion. I had MiLB.TV for a month last year. Quality is significantly varied from stadium to stadium. Good luck! I think it’s only AAA and some AA stadiums also.
