Five Questions Heading into Seahawks’ First Offseason Workout

The Seahawks start their off-season workouts today, in Renton. As they’re plugging away over at the VMAC, preparing for what we all hope will be a championship season, there are many questions that will need answering during the remainder of the off-season and the pre-season. These are the top five questions going into the draft.

1. Will Seattle be able to develop and maintain continuity on the offensive line?

One of the biggest hurdles the Hawks have had to overcome over the past years has been the deterioration of the O-line. For the first time in years, last season they showed progress up-front, bucking the downward trend they had been on since 2006. Developing as one cohesive unit could prove to be a problem again this… Continue reading

Tarvaris Jackson Let Me Fix His Twitter

So on Wednesday Tarvaris Jackson had a picture of himself as a Minnesota Viking playing against the Arizona Cardinals as the background of his Twitter account. I explained to him that that simply wasn’t ok, and that as a Seahawk he must update that picture. He didn’t object, but he had an issue.

You see, Tarvaris only uses Twitter from his iPhone. I don’t have an iPhone, so I didn’t know how to help him change the picture from his iPhone. But after some convincing, mainly T-Jack assuring I wasn’t some crazy guy out to ruin his life, Tarvaris gave me the password to his Twitter. You should check it out now by the way

Seahawks Roll Out Preseason Schedule; Host Titans Week 1

Seahawks fans wishing to say a final goodbye to Matt Hasselbeck will get their chance on Saturday, August 11th, as the Tennessee Titans will be Seattle’s first preseason opponent.

The Hawks will hit the road after that, playing in Kansas City and Denver, before finishing their exhibition games up at home, hosting Oakland.

Seahawks re-sign LBs Leroy Hill, Matt McCoy

With linebacker being the biggest question mark going into this year’s draft, the Seahawks helped shore up the position by retaining the services of Leroy Hill and Matt McCoy.

Hill, who re-inserted himself in the starting lineup last year, after a few shaky seasons in terms of consistent play and off-field issues, signed a one year deal. There was a good amount of buzz after last season that Hill would command a longer or more lucrative contract than the one year deal he had received just a year before, but following an arrest for marijuana possession — a charge which was later dropped by Atlanta police — Leroy finds himself returning under another short term deal.

Backup linebacker and special teams standout Matt McCoy is also returning to… Continue reading

David Hawthorne Signs with New Orleans

As the Seahawks potentially eye a linebacker early in the draft, their starter at middle linebacker from 2011 has moved on. David Hawthorne has signed a five year deal with the New Orleans Saints.

I presently don’t have terms for the contract, but I assume that it’s more than I’d have wanted the Seahawks to pay for Hawthorne, and ultimately it’s better for Hawthorne, who will be playing next two Jonathan Vilma and Curtis Lofton in a Saints linebacking corps that has quickly become one of the NFL’s best.

This probably means that K.J. Wright will move to middle linebacker, where his skills are probably better suited, and that the Seahawks will be able to fill their strong and weakside linebacker positions at points during the draft… Continue reading

Seattle Seahawks Must Still Draft a Quarterback

After Ryan Tannehill, my biggest mancrush in this draft may be BJ Coleman, who has top potential and will be drafted late.

Even though the Seahawks signed Matt Flynn the team needs to find a long-term backup, and a guy who may eventually be able to take over for Flynn if he’s ineffective or if he leaves in three years when he becomes a free agent. If the team doesn’t find a guy to fill that spot this season, and the present coaching staff and personnel team is still in tact when Flynn is eligible for free agency again, then they’ll be basically committed to bringing Flynn back on a long-term deal if they… Continue reading

Seattle Seahawks Still Interested in Ryan Tannehill?

When the Seahawks signed Matt Flynn I assumed that I’d have to end my offseason-long mancrush on Ryan Tannehill. Not so fast. Tannehill held a workout at the Texas A&M campus today, and while 22 teams were in attendance,  three teams showed particular interest: Miami, Cleveland, and your hometown Seattle Seahawks.

Before a bunch of controversy is started, it’s entirely possible that this is simply due diligence. The team may have already had plane tickets booked for Tannehill’s workout. But that they’d show up at all probably means that they have some level of interest. The chances that he’ll get through both Miami and Cleveland at least twice are pretty slim, so the Seahawks drafting Tannehill… Continue reading

Seattle Seahawks No. 12 Pick: Best Player Available

With the 12th overall selection this year, the Seahawks have an important decision to make. Unless all the stars align, they’ll have to decide if they’re going to draft for need, or draft their best player available. Obviously they’ll be able to evaluate each player individually, and may find some sort of happy medium that fulfills a need, but is also superior talent.

To this point the team hasn’t drafted the best player available (BPA) often. While Russell Okung and and Earl Thomas could have been considered the BPA the time they were drafted, they also presented the ideal scenario where the BPA happens to play at a position of significant need. Last year when… Continue reading | 1 Comment

Seattle Seahawks No. 12 Pick: Drafting for Need

Hello, my name is Luke Kuechly.

With Matt Flynn, Jason Jones, and Frank Omiyale on the roster, the Seahawks functionally filled all of their most obvious needs this offseason, as Flynn has enough upside to be the quarterback of the future, Jones can take care of some of the pass rush, and Omiyale gives the Seahawks depth at three positions on the offensive line. In conjunction with re-signing Marshawn Lynch and Red Bryant, and the release of Robert Gallery, the Seahawks list of offseason needs has been quite fluid to this point.

So when the Seahawks draft with their 12th overall pick there’s bound to be some dissention among… Continue reading

Seattle Seahawks sign Frank Omiyale

Every time I think I’ve figured out who the Seahawks will pick with the 12th overall selection they sign a prominent player who plays that position and screw it all up. Today, that guy is Frank Omiyale, and that position is GuardTackle. I know there is no space in GuardTackle. I don’t care.

After cutting Robert Gallery (in pursuit of Steve Hutchinson) the team is left without a logical starting left guard for Week 1, as James Carpenter may be on the PUP list at that time.

Omiyale played with Tom Cable in Atlanta and has experience in a zone-blocking scheme. I don’t think that Omiyale’s signing necessarily means that the Seahawks don’t draft an offensive lineman in the first round, but it brings them… Continue reading
