2013 Seattle Mariners Prospect No. 22: Tyler Marlette

Tyler Marlette, C, Pulaski Mariners (Rookie, average age 21.0 in 2012)

5-11, 195 lbs, 20 years old

Bats: Right, Throws: Right

Acquired: 2011 Amateur Draft (5th Round)

2012 Ranking: Unranked

ETA: 2016

Last year I considered Marlette the Mariners top catching prospect because I didn’t think that Montero was a prospect, or a catcher, and I wasn’t super-high on Jack Marder or John Hicks. I’m still pretty high on Marlette, and he’s still got the most potential of any catcher in the Mariners system not named Mike Zunino. Marlette didn’t show maturity as a hitter last year as he struck out an acceptable amount, but barely walked and hit for a pretty low average with limited power. He threw out 39 percent of would-be base stealers, and has the athleticism to become a very good defender.
