UPDATE – Seattle Sounders FC has officially announced the signing of Christian Tiffert as the side’s third DP. He will join the team in Seattle next week. Indications from coach Sigi Schmidt are that Tiffert will occupy the CM role.
For the second time in franchise history the Seattle Sounders FC have traded away a designated player, and for the second time it’s been to the Chicago Fire.
On the final day of Major League Soccer’s summer transfer window, midfielder Alvaro Fernandez was dealt to the Eastern Conference side for allocation money.
The move by the Sounders opens up a designated player spot which is expected to be filled by German midfielder Christian Tiffert.
Numerous German sources including Tiffert’s former club 1FCK have announced that the former U-21 national player has been let out of his contract to join Seattle.
The Sounders have yet to make a formal announcement of his signing but did say this morning that they’re in “advanced negotiations” with him.
This is the big move that many Sounders fans, myself included, have wanted to see made during the window.
Tiffert will probably start at LM where Flaco played but ultimately I would like to see him as a CM.
