The Chicago Cubs made a trade for their first basemen of the future, acquiring Anthony Rizzo from the San Diego Padres. The entire Cubs front office is very familiar with Rizzo, having been in both the Redsox and Padres farm systems. This trade essentially removes the Cubs from the Prince Fielder sweepstakes.
While the Nationals are rumored to be the front runners, GM Mike Rizzo came out yesterday saying, first base is settled. Take it with a grain of salt.
Either way, as the Fielder courtship draws on, teams being removed by way of other transations can only help the Mariners if they are in fact ready to make a play for the slugger.
